What dedicated hardware does that a browser tab can't
This part is not close, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. A purpose-built display earns its price in a few specific ways:

Runs with no computer at all
Hardware like the BlockClock Mini plugs into power and that is the whole setup. A browser clock needs a device with a browser to stay open and awake somewhere — it is not truly standalone.

E-ink stays legible anywhere
E-ink panels read clearly in direct sunlight and draw almost no power holding a static image. An LCD or laptop screen washes out in bright rooms and burns battery keeping the display lit.

It is a physical object
A dedicated unit sits on a desk or shelf as a deliberate piece of hardware — something to look at, gift or show off. A browser tab is a browser tab, however good the numbers in it are.

Nothing else competes for the screen
A dedicated display only ever shows one thing. A laptop or tablet running a browser can get closed, switched away from, or claimed for something else — a screen with one job is harder to accidentally repurpose.

Both are reading the same network
Whichever screen shows it, the Bitcoin block time you are watching does not change: block height climbs by one roughly every ten minutes, on hardware and in a browser alike. Neither display makes the network faster — they are both just windows onto the same public data.

The honest verdict
Buy dedicated hardware if you want a permanent, standalone object that runs with nothing else attached and stays readable in a bright room — a shelf display, a gift, or a unit for somewhere a computer will never sit. Use a browser-based clock if you already have a spare screen, want more than one view, or would rather try it free before spending anything on the idea at all.

Should I buy a dedicated Bitcoin display or just use a browser tab?
It depends what you want. A dedicated display like Coinkite's BlockClock Mini is a physical object built to sit on a shelf and run forever without a computer attached, with an e-ink screen that stays legible in direct sunlight. A browser-based clock like this one is free, opens instantly on any screen you already own, and can switch between several views instead of showing one fixed reading. Neither is wrong; they solve different problems.
Is BlockClock affiliated with Coinkite or the BlockClock Mini?
No. Coinkite's BlockClock Mini and BlockClock Micro are hardware products made and sold by Coinkite. This site is an independent, browser-based Bitcoin clock with no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from Coinkite in either direction. The shared word in the name is a coincidence of plain English, not a claim of any relationship.
Can a browser tab really run as an always-on wall display like hardware does?
Almost, with one honest caveat. Point an old laptop, tablet or monitor at the clock view and it will refresh itself indefinitely. The difference is that a computer has to stay powered on and awake, where dedicated hardware is built to run on its own with no host machine at all. If you already have a spare screen sitting idle, that gap rarely matters.
Why is a browser clock free when hardware costs money?
Because the costs are completely different. Dedicated hardware means Coinkite designing, manufacturing, shipping and supporting a physical product, which is real work worth paying for. A browser page reads the same public Bitcoin data and draws it with code, with no manufacturing or shipping involved, so there is nothing to charge for.
